The leadership of the Nigerian Army has released a statement on why the body is yet to rescue the abducted UNIMAID lecturers from the enclaves of Boko Haram. The Defence Headquarters has explained that the inability of the military to rescue lecturers, oil workers and women in Boko Haram enclave was because the terrorists were using the distraught captives as human shield.It said the military cannot apply full force to free the captives because doing so would endanger their lives. Recall that ten women among them female police personnel were on June 21, abducted in a raid by the militant group on a military/police convoy along Damboa Road, in Borno State. The opposition leader in the East African nation of Kenya, Raila Odinga, has stunned supporters as he withdraws from the presidential race. Raila Odinga, Kenya’s opposition leader, on Tuesday announced his withdrawal from the presidential re-run elections scheduled for Oct. 26. According to Vanguard, Odinga said at a news conference in Nairobi that he was boycotting the polls because his demands for electoral reform had not been met. A re-run of the presidential vote was announced after Kenya’s Supreme Court nullified the result of the Aug. 8 election due to Odinga’s complaint. Odinga claimed that the computers of the electoral commission had been hacked to generate a victory for President Uhuru Kenyatta. The initial results announced on August 11, gave Kenyatta a second term with 54 per cent of the votes, followed by Odinga with 44.7 per cent. 3 Gov Election: INEC Deploys 6,000 Card Readers

INEC is prepared to organise the forthcoming election in Anambra State with the deployment of thousands of card readers. The Independent National Electoral Commission said on Tuesday that it had deployed over 6, 000 card reader machines to ensure smooth conduct of the November 18, Anambra governorship election. The INEC Administrative Secretary in Anambra, Mr Charles Mbanaja, said that out of the machines provided 5,000 had been tested and found to be in good working condition. The secretary assured stakeholders of the readiness of the commission to provide a level playing ground to in all candidates participating in the election and urged politicians to play by the rules. He said INEC had embarked on public enlightenment to sensitise the people on the electoral processes, especially the voting system to address re-occurring cases of invalid votes and other related electoral shortcomings during the election. President Buhari today had a closed-door meeting with all the service chiefs, the Minister of defence, Masur Dan-Ali and Babagana Monguno, national security adviser, at the state house in Abuja. The meeting presided over by the president, also had in attendance Lawal Daura, director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS); Arab Yadam, the acting director of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA) and a representative of the inspector-general of police. The service chiefs at the meeting included Gabriel Olonisakin, chief of defence staff; Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff; Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, chief of naval staff, and Sadique Abubakar, chief of air staff.
