Court Orders Police to Produce Evans’ Brother-in-law

The police has been ordered by a court sitting in Lagos to produce Evan’s brother-in-law who has been in police detention since his arrest. The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the police to bring before it one Mr. Okwuchukwu Obiechina said to be the brother-in-law of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans. According to a report by Punch, the order was given by Justice Mohammed Idris who directed that Obiechina must be brought before him on Thursday, October 12. Justice Idris gave the ruling following a suit filed by Obiechina, praying the court to order his release from police detention. His lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, said Obiechina had been detained by the police since June 2 in connection with the kidnapping case of his brother-in-law, Evans. The suit, marked FHC/L/CS/1050/20177, has Obiechina and his wife, Nzube, who is Evans’ sister, as plaintiffs. They sued the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State; the Nigeria Police Force; and

Nigeria Customs Fires 61, Retires 16 Officers Over Certificate Forgery

61 officials of the Nigeria Custom Service have been relieved of their duties following a range of offences committed. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has dismissed not more than 61 officers for offences ranging from certificate forgery, improper examination and fraudulent release of containers. The list of the affected officers which was obtained exclusively by SHIPS & PORTS DAILY on Monday showed that 16 other officers were retired from the Service also for certificate forgery and refusal of staff order. The document showed that 41 officers who were investigated and tried were exonerated, 22 officers were issued with query while 5 other officers were given written warning to be of better behaviour. 2 of the officers who were affected were of the rank of Comptroller of Customs while 3 were Deputy Comptrollers of Customs. Others were 9 Assistant Controller and 9 Chief Superintendent of Customs among others.

The opposition leader in the East African nation of Kenya, Raila Odinga, has stunned supporters as he withdraws from the presidential race. Raila Odinga, Kenya’s opposition leader, on Tuesday announced his withdrawal from the presidential re-run elections scheduled for Oct. 26. According to Vanguard, Odinga said at a news conference in Nairobi that he was boycotting the polls because his demands for electoral reform had not been met. A re-run of the presidential vote was announced after Kenya’s Supreme Court nullified the result of the Aug. 8 election due to Odinga’s complaint. Odinga claimed that the computers of the electoral commission had been hacked to generate a victory for President Uhuru Kenyatta. The initial results announced on August 11, gave Kenyatta a second term with 54 per cent of the votes, followed by Odinga with 44.7 per cent. 3 Gov Election: INEC Deploys 6,000 Card Readers

INEC is prepared to organise the forthcoming election in Anambra State with the deployment of thousands of card readers. The Independent National Electoral Commission said on Tuesday that it had deployed over 6, 000 card reader machines to ensure smooth conduct of the November 18, Anambra governorship election. The INEC Administrative Secretary in Anambra, Mr Charles Mbanaja, said that out of the machines provided 5,000 had been tested and found to be in good working condition. The secretary assured stakeholders of the readiness of the commission to provide a level playing ground to in all candidates participating in the election and urged politicians to play by the rules. He said INEC had embarked on public enlightenment to sensitise the people on the electoral processes, especially the voting system to address re-occurring cases of invalid votes and other related electoral shortcomings during the election.
